CAKE Awards January 2026 Photo Collage

Congratulations to Penelope Lish, a 5th grade learner attending Greenacres Elementary, and Aeva Phillips, an 8th grade learner attending Alameda Middle School, who were chosen as the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District 25 January C.A.K.E. award recipients. C.A.K.E. stands for Character, Attitude, Kindness and Encouragement.

Penelope Lish was nominated by Ms. Aubrey Eldredge. In her nomination letter, Ms. Eldredge described Penelope as “the definition of kindness,’ a description that is reflected in Penelope’s daily actions and interactions with others.

Although Penelope is new to Greenacres this year, Ms. Eldredge shared that she has “embraced our school community with a warm and welcoming spirit.” From the very first day, Penelope has demonstrated strong character by treating every classmate with respect, empathy, and genuine kindness.

Within the classroom, Ms. Eldredge noted that Penelope “consistently leads with kindness.” When learners from the Greenacres ERR program join the class during math and ELA centers, Penelope goes out of her way to make sure each student feels included and supported. Ms. Eldredge shared that Penelope is often jumping up to grab them a chair, a pencil, or anything else they might need - always without being asked – so everyone feels comfortable and ready to learn. She added that “our ERR friends always want to work with Penelope because she is so patient, encouraging, and welcoming. She has a natural ability to make others feel valued and welcome.”

Ms. Eldredge also emphasized Penelope’s positive attitude and determination. “No matter how challenging an assignment may be, Penelope never gives up,” she wrote. Penelope works hard, perseveres, and sets a strong example for her classmates. Ms. Eldredge noted that Penelope walks into the class each day with “a bright smile and a willingness to learn,” even on days she may not be feeling her best.

Ms. Eldredge shared that Penelope’s “character, attitude, kindness, and encouragement make our classroom and school a better place.” Through her actions, Penelope lifts others up simply by being herself, and she is so deserving of recognition for the way she leads with her kindness every single day.

Aeva Phillips was nominated by Ms. Amy Mann. In her nomination, Ms. Mann shared that Aeva “consistently demonstrates strong character, a positive attitude, genuine kindness, and encouragement toward others,” making her an outstanding example of the CAKE values.

Ms. Mann highlighted Aeva’s strong character through her work ethic and sense of responsibility. She noted that Aeva works diligently on her classwork, takes pride in completing assignments on time, and Aeva plans ahead when she knows she will be absent. “She regularly checks her grades, asks thoughtful questions, and shows a sincere desire to do well academically.” Ms. Mann wrote, adding that Aeva’s commitment to learning set a positive example for her peers.

In addition to her academic dedication, Ms. Mann shared that Aeva maintains a positive attitude - even on difficult days. “She comes to class with a smile on her face and consistently does her best,” she noted regardless of challenges she may be facing. She communicates respectfully with both teachers and peers, helping create a calm and welcoming classroom environment. Aeva also takes the time to check in with me each morning to ask how things are going, which reflects her thoughtfulness, maturity, and respect for others.

Ms. Mann also emphasized Aeva’s kindness and inclusivity. During group work, Aeva is attentive to those around her and ensures no one feels left out. Ms. Mann described a moment when Aeva noticed a classmate without a group and, without being prompted, “walked over to the student and kindly invited them to join her group so they would not have to work alone.” This simple but powerful act demonstrated genuine empathy and leadership.

Ms. Mann shared that Aeva consistently offers encouragement to others – supporting classmates who feel nervous speaking aloud and motivates peers who become discouraged. Her kind words and reassurance help build confidence perseverance.  Ms. Mann wrote that Aeva “truly embodies the values of the C.A.K.E. Award,” and her actions make a meaningful impact on our classroom community.

Penelope and Aeva were recognized at the Board of Trustees meeting on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. Our Partner for this award, Johnson Family McDonald's provides each learner and their nominators with a gift card, along with $50 to purchase books for the school’s media center in the recipients’ names.

PCSD 25 believes a safe, supportive, caring and respectful environment is critical to student learning. The District Education Foundation, in partnership with McDonald’s, supports the Learner-of-the-Month C.A.K.E. Award to recognize students who show great character.  The district recognizes one elementary learner and one secondary learner from October through May. Nominations for the C.A.K.E. Award are submitted by a teacher who has observed the nominee’s behavior, and are approved by the school’s principal.
