Pocatello High School Artists Donate Hand-Painted Violins to Idaho State-Civic Symphony Fundraiser

Three members of Pocatello High School have combined visual art and music in a meaningful way, donating their time and talent to support the Idaho State-Civic Symphony’s upcoming Painted Symphony fundraising event. Ms. Jennifer VanWasshenova and two of her senior art students, Aaliyah Johnson and Ava Rose Lee, have each created a hand-painted violin that will be featured in the Symphony’s community art auction. Their three original works will be displayed beginning February 6 at the Pocatello Art Center in conjunction with the city’s First Friday Art Walk. The violins will then be auctioned to the highest bidder to raise funds for music education and outreach programs. The event highlights the powerful connection between the performing and visual arts while strengthening partnerships between the Symphony, local educators, students, and the broader community. Proceeds from the auction will directly support the Symphony’s mission to perform, teach, and champion music that enriches the community and inspires a lifelong love of the arts.

Featured Artwork

"Todo Estará Bien” – Aaliyah Johnson (Violin #13)

Inspired by the song “Todo Está Bien” by Juan Gabriel, this piece reflects the idea that “everything is alright.” Johnson’s design is part of her larger collection, The Escape from Reality, which explores how music offers connection, peace, and emotional release—especially during mental health challenges. Drawing inspiration from nature, memory, and her personal experiences, Johnson’s work captures both raw emotion and hope. Aaliyah is a senior at Pocatello High School and plans to attend Idaho State University to study art education. She hopes to inspire future students to express themselves creatively when words fall short.

“She Who Blossoms” – Ava Rose Lee (Violin #14)

Lee’s violin explores themes of feminine growth, transformation, and self-knowledge. Falling petals symbolize the transition into one’s full self, embraced with strength and calm confidence. Inspired by her own experiences as a young woman, this piece expands on her AP Art portfolio, which centers on women’s perspectives, power, and connection. Also, a senior at Pocatello High School, Ava plans to pursue art education at Idaho State University. A competitive dancer for over a decade and the current student body president, she hopes to share the therapeutic impact of art with future generations.

“Where Wildflowers Sing” – Jennifer VanWasshenova (Violin #22)

Inspired by Pocatello’s natural beauty, VanWasshenova’s violin features an impressionistic black-eyed Susan, revealing portions of the violin’s natural oak beneath the paint. The piece incorporates a loosely rendered Pocatello landscape, created with permission from local photographer Gary Clay. The work celebrates the connection between art, nature, and community. VanWasshenova has taught art at Pocatello High School since 2009. In addition to being an educator, she is an active artist whose colorful, expressive landscapes and portraits reflect her love of family, travel, and the outdoors. Community members are encouraged to view the violins at the Pocatello Art Center and participate in the auction. Additional information about viewing times and upcoming showings can be found on the Symphony’s website and event materials.

Through their generosity and creativity, these three artists are helping promote the Symphony’s mission and demonstrating the vital role the arts play in supporting connection, wellness, and community enrichment.
