School District 25 Reading Proficiency Continues to Rise on 2025 Idaho Reading Indicator

Pocatello/Chubbuck School District 25 continues to make impressive strides in early literacy, according to the 2025 Idaho Reading Indicator (IRI) results released last spring. The data show sustained growth in reading proficiency among K-3 learners, reinforcing PCSD 25’s commitment to ensuring every child reads at or above grade level.

The latest data show that 73.6% of PCSD 25 learners in grades K–3 are reading at grade level, outperforming the statewide average and underscoring the district’s commitment to academic excellence for all learners.

Continued Gains in Literacy Achievement

PCSD 25 has seen steady improvement in reading proficiency across all grade levels. From Fall 2024 to Spring 2025, the district achieved a 12.1 percentage point increase in overall reading proficiency—proof that early intervention, high-quality instruction, and family engagement are driving meaningful results.

Highlights from the 2025 IRI:

  • Districtwide Growth: PCSD 25’s reading proficiency climbed from Fall to Spring by 12.1 percentage points, reaching 73.6% of learners at grade level.
  • Kindergarten Success: Kindergarten learners showed an impressive 10.8 percentage point increase from Spring 2024 to Spring 2025, with 83.7% reading at grade level.
  • First Grade Improvements: First graders improved 3.2 percentage points from the previous year’s spring assessment.
  • Outperforming the State Average: PCSD 25’s results surpass state averages on the IRI. This achievement is particularly significant because every learner in the district participates in the assessment—no exemptions are given.

About the Idaho Reading Indicator

The Idaho Reading Indicator (IRI) is a statewide assessment administered each fall and spring to K–3 learners. It measures key literacy skills to ensure every child is on track to become a confident reader.

  • Tier 1: At Grade Level
  • Tier 2: Near/Below Grade Level
  • Tier 3: Well Below Grade Level

Schools use fall results to identify students who need additional reading support and track growth through spring testing. These results guide instruction, interventions, and resource allocation to ensure literacy success for every learner.

PCSD 25 is Dedicated to Achievement for All

PCSD 25 serves a diverse and dynamic population, including:

  • 46% of learners from low-income families
  • 17% of learners with disabilities
  • 0% of learners exempted from IRI testing

Despite these demographics, the district continues to outperform the state average and neighboring charter schools. As Superintendent Howell noted, “Our teachers, principals, and staff are dedicated to helping every learner succeed. These results show that when we focus on literacy and support each learner’s unique needs, achievement follows.”
