Welcome Families!

We are SO EXCITED to have you in our Lincoln family for the 2023-2024 school year, and I am extremely proud to serve as the new Principal here. I know that my experience as a former teacher in the Early Intervention Program will help me navigate the transition as our school administrator.

If you are new to our school family or are browsing our website, here is a little bit more about our program: we serve preschool aged children with special needs who meet eligibility requirements for special education services as outlined by the state of Idaho and are on an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). We have an AMAZING staff of certified early childhood special education teachers, highly qualified paraprofessionals, a school psychologist, occupational and physical therapists, and speech and language pathologists who work with our young learners. We are housed in the same building as the Head Start program, and we are part of the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District #25 where most of our students transition to Kindergarten.

If you are a returning family, you may find that some things have changed this year, for instance, the use of ClassTag for communicating with families about important updates. We also have a few new faces on our staff: Wenda Hansen (early childhood special education teacher), Ali Stacks (speech and language assistant), Cami Turner and Misty Poppleton (classroom paraprofessionals). As we continuously reflect, we will continue to make improvements to our program.

This year the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District #25’s focus is reinvigorating the classroom and finding joy. We are lucky at Lincoln to experience joy with our young learners as they acquire new skills and make progress toward their goals. Some of these things may seem small: improved mobility, being able to greet a peer, learning to cut with scissors; but as we know, for children with developmental delays these acquisitions can be huge accomplishments and stepping stones to reaching more developmental milestones.

Head Start's Annual Box Car Race Event is November 30th 5:30-7
Head Start Annual Box Car Race Fatherhood Event

On November 30th, Head Start will host its annual Box Car Race Fatherhood Event for Head Start families. Dads can come and build a box car with their Head Start child, then race against other dads down the hall. Following the race, there will be a short drive-in movie, and dinner will be provided. This is a wonderful opportunity for fathers to spend quality time with their child and connect with other Head Start fathers. Mothers are invited to come and cheer on their team.

On November 9th, 2023, Head Start hosted our annual coat drive. A huge thank you goes out to the Pocatello Fire Department, Idaho Central Credit Union, and those in the community who donated through United Way of Southeastern Idaho for their monetary generosity and for dedicating their time to make this coat drive possible. It was amazing to witness the excitement of our students as they received their new coats and hats, ensuring that they have warm attire for the winter!

Visitors From the Farm

Miss Curria's class had some special guests in their classroom last week!  Bunnies from a local farm were able to come and visit!  The students enjoyed holding the bunnies as well as learning more about where they live and what they eat.  They even got to feed them carrots!

FRED (Families Reading Every Day)

For every 15 minutes you read with your child, write the date in a box. When all the boxes are dated, return this log for a free book to keep and enjoy at home. Head start is funded by a federal grant. In order to keep getting this grant, Head Start has to match 30% of our grant dollars with volunteer or or donated time/materials. Each hour you spend with your child reading contributes $17.24 to our grant. Filling out this sheet will gain $258.60 grant dollars for Head Start!

March 2024 Learner of the Month, C.A.K.E. Recipients
C.A.K.E. Awards February 2024 Capri Casper 5th Grade Greenacres and Aubrey Davis 10th Grade Century High School

Congratulations to Roz, a Pre-K learner, and Mason, an 11th grade learner attending Century High School, who were chosen as the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District 25 March C.A.K.E. award recipients. C.A.K.E. stands for Character, Attitude, Kindness and Encouragement.

Roz was nominated by her teacher, Mrs. Jordan Proctor. In her nomination letter, Mrs. Proctor wrote, “I would like to nominate Roz for the CAKE award for the joy, positivity, and kindness she shows to her teachers and classmates. Roz is always excited to come to school and eager to interact with her classmates. She greets us all by name and knows when someone is absent; she asks if they will be coming and if they are okay. She is a helper to peers who may need more support and loves to cheer them on when they are successful with difficult tasks. Roz is a great student and an example to me of someone with great character, attitude, unending kindness, and encouragement.”

Mason was nominated by Mrs. Jessica Woodland, Mrs. Cindy Youngstrom and Mr. Scott Eldredge. 

In her nomination letter, Mrs. Woodland wrote, “When I think of Mason, I think of a happy person. Every time I see Mason he has a big smile on his face. No matter what's happening in his life, he's always happy and pleasant. He is such a joy to be around.”

Mrs. Youngstrom wrote, “I would like to nominate Mason Dalton for the CAKE award because of his ongoing positive attitude under extremely difficult conditions. On the heels of his mother's unexpected passing, Mason's father began having life-threatening medical issues. During the last two years, Mason's positive attitude and cheery disposition have been inspiring for me to witness. With every hardship, Mason responds with positivity, jumping in to help solve, or at least lighten the family's burdens. Another valiant virtue Mason demonstrates is his love and loyalty to family. Because of dire circumstances, Mason's siblings went to live with extended family out of state. However, Mason chose to remain with his dad so he could support him and help him. Mason also cites that he has found comfort in his high school community and didn't want to leave Century. I smile every time I hear Mason lovingly refer to his father as "The Big Guy" and he is dedicated to serving him every chance he gets. Mason's attendance and grades have slipped at times because of the home life burdens he bears but he never gives up and he always comes back to being a student in good standing. I could give example after example of why Mason deserves this recognition but instead, I will leave you with a list of the virtues this young man lives every single day. Kindness, Love, Loyalty, Optimism, Patience, Perseverance, Resilience, Sacrifice, Service, Strength, Wisdom. I am honored to watch this young man navigate life's relentless beat down and always come out of it with a smile on his face!”

Mr. Eldredge wrote, “In my many years as an educator, I have had the pleasure of being around some incredible students. Mason stands out among those incredible students with his infectious, positive attitude. Every day he is in class, he has positively impacted his peers and myself. He faces each challenge life throws at him with optimism. As a teacher, it is my goal to offer hope and inspiration to my students, however, it's a special occurrence when a student like Mason becomes the source of hope and inspiration. Mason's ability to spread positivity and joy makes him extremely deserving of this award!”

Roz and Mason were recognized at the Board of Trustees meeting on Tuesday, March 12,, 2024. McDonald's provides each learner and their nominators with a gift card, along with $50 to purchase books for the school’s media center in the recipients’ names. 

PCSD 25 believes a safe, supportive, caring and respectful environment is critical to student learning. The District Education Foundation, in partnership with the local Johnson Family McDonald’s, supports the Learner-of-the-Month C.A.K.E. Award to recognize students who show great character.  The district recognizes one elementary learner and one secondary learner from October through May. Nominations for the C.A.K.E. Award are submitted by a teacher who has observed the nominee’s behavior, and are approved by the school’s principal.

Will meals be provided free of charge to all learners during the 2023-2024 school year?

No. The USDA has suspended the waiver that provided free meals to all learners during the pandemic. Free and reduced meals will continue to be provided for those learners who qualify during the 2023-2024 school year. To qualify for free and reduced meals, parents and guardians are encouraged to fill out the free and reduced meal application after July 1, 2023. Refer to our Food Services website for more information.

How do I apply for my child to receive free and reduced meals?

When is graduation for the Class of 2024?

  • New Horizon High School: Thursday, May 30, 2024
  • Highland High School: Friday, May 31, 2024
  • Century High School: Friday, May 31, 2024

When do I find out about transfers?

  • The elementary transfer meeting is Thursday, August 10, 2023.
  • Secondary schools transfers are notified within 60 days of submission of the application.

Educator Appreciation Week 2023
Take Flight You Put the MORE in MORE Together

As the school year winds down, I have reflected a lot on the many accomplishments of our district. We have indeed taken flight this year!

Instructionally, we have learned to adapt in an ever-changing world of technology and yet remain committed to personal learning and interactive experiences. Academically, we strive to meet our learners' needs in our classrooms with engaging, problem solving, critical thinking and collaborative opportunities. Co-curricular and extra-curricular activities continue to flourish with numerous district, state, national and academic championships. 

As with any success, these results do not come without the preparation, drive, hard work, passion and dedication of each team member. These values are the foundation of our culture and I am fortunate to be on a team that exhibits these characteristics on a daily basis. 

In the past couple of weeks, it has been affirmed to me that our district truly embraces our motto of "More Together." In our efforts to adjust to a devastating fire, I watched, listened and facilitated multiple meetings in which representatives of administration, the Board of Trustees, Maintenance & Operations, Food Service, Transportation, Technology and a BLT came together to brainstorm ideas for solutions that capitalized on each team member's valuable input to maintain the continuity of learning and activities while making efforts to minimize disruptions. It was obvious through this experience that this type of problem solving happens continually throughout our district. Please know how much each of you are appreciated as you take part in daily discussions that have the same goals in mind. 

It is with admiration and respect that the Board and your district leadership flight team recognize all of your contributions not only this week, but the entire year. And please, enjoy a fun experience with your gift card.
